It's too bad that the non-HD footage of the time period couldn't have been upgraded. When all the interviews and current footage are sparkling HD, it really stands out when the non-HD material shows up.

I'm sure cost was likely the issue here, but still it was often very noticeable and jarring. Overall, though, "The s" was a fun journey through the decade in which I graduated both high school and college. Sigl also would have more trouble assembling his project years ago. But the same access to information that can settle any bar argument instantly with an iPhone connection allows Sigl to do most of his blog research "from my living room. Add in phenomena like Britney Spears, the octomom, the celebrity blogger Perez Hilton and reality TV, and Sigl sees a second running theme perhaps bigger than technology. You can read about these things as if you're in a magazine or something.

It's narcissism of a kind that really has exploded this decade. I'd say the technology has indulged that a bit more," he says. Though technology is a popular choice for defining the decade now, not everyone seems certain it will stay that way. But from today's perspective, with the post-attack mind-set fading and no subsequent large-scale attacks on the U. To future generations, he believes, the decade's definition may "depend upon what has happened recently.

But if there's been a lull in events for awhile, maybe we'll say, 'Look at those investment bankers , they really brought us to our knees. When revisionist historians look back, what will they call the decade when those terrorists, disasters and investment bankers struck? When the decade began, we debated whether we were entering the s, the ohs, the aughts, the naughts or the milleni-os -- and maybe we still don't know. I think that name was a bit looking backward rather than looking forward. Shusterman, who currently works as co-founder of the Web site jobnob.

He still had hope in a interview that the first decade of the 21st century would get a definitive name by the time it ended, but now admits he still sees no consensus. The Secrets of Their Success ," don't believe a consensus name would emerge, arguing that some things just defy being named. That's because it doesn't fit the pattern of twenties through nineties. So there won't be a numerical name for the next decade either. It will be such a relief to get to the twenties! We'll just have to continue living under the burden of paraphrase.

Batchelor, the author of "The s," who will soon be teaching at Kent State University in Ohio, worries the lack of a common way to refer to the decade has significance -- and might even doom it to oblivion. But he doesn't think it was "the Bush decade ," because he believes history will judge Bush as a "a losing president," and "I don't think people want to put a loser label on it. Though he believes individual events will be remembered, our nameless decade may fall through the cracks. You have the assembly line -- jeez, the things that happened. But ask people to define the s period before World War I, and most draw a blank, he says.

But for a time, they're overlooked. Add to that the here-today-gone-tomorrow aspect of the modern news cycle, and Batchelor is more skeptical that people of tomorrow will think about today. The most significant evolution of the early s in the economic landscape was the long-time predicted breakthrough of economic giant China , which had double-digit growth during nearly the whole decade.

To a lesser extent, India also benefited from an economic boom [89] which saw the two most populous countries becoming an increasingly dominant economic force. The economic developments in the latter third of the decade were dominated by a worldwide economic downturn, which started with the crisis in housing and credit in the United States in late , and led to the bankruptcy of major banks and other financial institutions. The period takes its name from Gordon Brown , the then UK Chancellor of the Exchequer who later became Prime Minister , who decided to sell approximately half of the UK's gold reserves in a series of auctions.

The removal of trade and investment barriers , the growth of domestic markets , artificially low currencies , the proliferation of education , the rapid development of high tech and information systems industries and the growth of the world economy lead to a significant growth of offshore outsourcing during the decade as many multinational corporations significantly increased subcontracting of manufacturing and increasingly, services across national boundaries in developing countries and particularly in China and India, due to many benefits and mainly because the two countries which are the two most populous countries in the world provide huge pools from which to find talent and as because both countries are low cost sourcing countries.

As a result of this growth, many of these developing countries accumulated capital and started investing abroad. Other countries, including the United Arab Emirates , Australia, Brazil and Russia, benefited from increased demand for their mineral and energy resources that global growth generated. The hollowing out of manufacturing was felt in Japan and parts of the United States and Europe which had not been able to develop successful innovative industries.

Opponents point out that the practice of offshore outsourcing by countries with higher wages leads to the reduction of their own domestic employment and domestic investment. As a result, many customer service jobs as well as jobs in the information technology sectors data processing , computer programming , and technical support in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom have been or are potentially affected.

While global trade rose in the decade partially driven by China's entry into the WTO in , there was little progress in the multilateral trading system. International trade continued to expand during the decade as emerging economies and developing countries, in particular China and South-Asian countries, benefited low wages costs and most often undervalued currencies. However, global negotiations to reduce tariffs did not make much progress, as member countries of the World Trade Organization did not succeed in finding agreements to stretch the extent of free trade.

The comparative rise of China, India, and other developing countries also contributed to their growing clout in international fora. In , it was determined that the G20 , originally a forum of finance ministers and central bank governors, would replace the G8 as the main economic council. Events in the confidence crisis included recalls on consumer goods such as pet food , toys , toothpaste , lipstick , and a ban on certain types of seafood.
