KIRKUS REVIEW

In New York during the s and after, the two feuding Astors built monumental grand hotels, chief among them the original Waldorf-Astoria on lower Fifth Avenue. The Astor hotels transformed social behavior. Home of the chafing dish and the velvet rope, the Waldorf-Astoria drew the rich, famous, and fashionable. The celebrity-packed lobbies, public rooms, lavish suites, and exclusive restaurants of the grand hotels became distinctive theaters of modern life.

I thought it went a little too deep on some members of the family. I would have like a broader perspective on more Astors as well as a little more about where that fortune is now.

This relatively slimmed down version of the Astor family's rise to financial prominence frustrated as well as informed me. As an outline it has enough information about the family and the lavish hotels they built to give a general reader the gist of their influence on the shape and lifestyle of New York high society in the turn of the 20th century period.

The rivalry between the two wealthy cousins and their individual eccentricities are well covered. So much more could have been included on some of the more interesting episodes of the family history that were almost strangely glossed over by the author. I found myself looking up things to supplement my understanding frequently because the book left me hanging on some of the most intriguing aspects of this story.

That said , I did enjoy the book and learned some interesting background on the Astors and the author stimulated my curiosity to know more so from that perspective this was a worthwhile read. I think a more in depth treatment of the subjects here would have been warranted. Absolutely great read for anyone who loves history, juicy gossip, and seeing how the other half lives--from those who pulled themselves up by their bootstraps to those who followed--sometimes working diligently to enhance the family fortunes--sometimes working overtime to waste it.

You won't regret buying this book, written eloquently by an author who is as historically correct as he is entertaining.

When the Astors Owned New York by Justin Kaplan | omiwycokin.tk

Great historical account of the early days and formation of New York society, the list, and the famous families that still dominate NY society today. It starts with the first beaver trapping Astor who instilled the value of land in his sons. From a small downtown office, the family managed to purchase nearly all of the available land at the time, although the morality of how they par;ayed this into their fortune is questionable.

It goes into further detail about how the rivalries between the wioves of these men fueld a family feud and makes for interesting reading overall. The book is well written and moves along quickly. Definitely worth reading to those who get into this kind of material. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase.

Well written but nothing in particular that I haven't read before. I did pick up a few little things but nothing really outstanding. However, it was well done enough that I read it to the end, something I often do not do. One thing on which I wish there was more detail was the life of Mrs. Astor after losing her husband on the Titanic. Surely someone knows more about her and their son.

A great read about an incredibly interesting time in New York history. As someone who has always been fascinated with New York city during this time period and the wonderful hotels that existed and some that remain I found this an easy, enjoyable, and informative read. I would think that anyone who has an interest in the grand hotels of this era will enjoy this book as well. I find it interesting that some other reviews have bemoaned the fact that it is not a biography of the Astor family.

  • This is a book about what the title says: If you go with that expectation I don't think you will be disappointed. I never tire of reading of the gilded age and and the pastimes of the filthy rich. The reader can be transported to the scene of competative parties, quiet marital separations, jealousy played out on a grand scale.

The wealthiest familiy in America, who dominated NYC for years in real estate and society. Written by Pulitzer Prize winner Justin Kaplan, he encapsulates the lifestyle of hard work, creativity, arrogance, and wealth during the gilded age. I'm half way through the book and enjoy each direction of the Astor's journey to prosperity, and even the twist of one family leader permanently relocating to England.

Great book on the Astors and whole of New York.
